Herbal Home Remedies for Cold and Croup: 9 Natural Easy Remedies

Croup is as common as a cold or cough. One may have a barking cough and face difficulties breathing well. Croup can happen due to many reasons, mostly it happens because of the parainfluenza virus.

Both kids and adults can get croup, even a 3 month-old can suffer from this horrible barking cough. It is best to identify and diagnose croup when you observe symptoms such as fast breathing, hoarseness, sore throat, sounds while breathing, fever, runny and stuffy nose. While crying, the symptoms get worse in kids as they can block the air.

One should also be alert at night as the nose can get more stuffy at that time. You might take an over-the-counter pill to relieve the congestion and mucus. However, these may include some side-effects too. 

Although croup may resolve within a few days, the infection or cough may linger around for more days than imagined. In order to ensure that you or your dear ones don’t suffer from such barking cough anymore, you can try these herbal home remedies.

1. Garlic

Garlic is an all-rounder and it can certainly treat the cough and mucus that are causing croup. Since it is a natural ingredient, it can safely be fed to children as well.

Chewing a clove of garlic can help get the taste back. Often when a person has croup, they lose their sense of taste.

Eating garlic can help relieve inflammation and break down the mucus that is causing the croup infection. It is also very helpful in reducing body temperature and stabilising relieving the congestion. You can take about 15 gms of garlic daily.

2. Ginger 

Ginger is said to break the mucus membranes. It helps spit out the cough naturally so the infection stops spreading.

When your coughing sounds like barking and you’re sure you have croup, you can start consuming raw ginger every day. This helps reduce the congestion, stuffy nose and barking cough too.

You may also take ginger tea every day or mix it with any other herbal ingredients for best taste and results.

3. Mullein

Many respiratory tract illnesses can be solved by consuming Mullein leaves. The leaves are so powerfully bitter yet effective.

You can boil some water by adding some mullein leaves to it. Let the water boil and abstract some properties of mullein.

You may then add some drops of honey to sweeten the water and consume it on a daily basis to relieve sore throat, common cold, cough or even croup. It helps in all respiratory diseases and even reduces fever.

Consuming Mullein leaves regularly can prevent you from having any respiratory illness.

4. Elderberry

Elderberry is a traditional anti-viral and antibacterial herb used for many cold and cough problems. Since Elderberry is a very tasty herb, kids love it and can easily consume it.

Its antioxidants boost the production of healthy bacteria and increase your body’s immunity to fight croup. Both kids and adults can consume elderberry syrups.

You can easily get these from a local store or crush some of it at home. These are easily available at any local herb store.

5. Honey & Lemon

Honey has many antioxidants and antiviral properties that can reduce mucus secretion and the cough that causes croup.

Recent studies have suggested that honey is more powerful than any other croup or cough treatments. Honey has no side-effects and can be consumed by adults and kids too as it is very sweet.

It is advised to consume honey and lemon tea every day so your respiratory organs remain strong and prevent croup and cough.

6. Onions

Onions have great healing properties and can help in skin, scalp and respiratory tract infections too. If your child faces troubles breathing and coughs constantly, you may boil some water and add sliced onions to it.

The aroma will do its job.

You can also wrap the then-used onions in a piece of cloth and place it on the chest until it is cold. Chewing an onion slice can also help one relieve the congestion and reduce coughing.

7. Epsom Salt Bath

Having a warm water bath can be very effective in relieving congestion. Adding essential oils or Epsom salt can be extremely beneficial in treating croup. 

Epsom salt helps in the absorption of magnesium through our skin. Hence, the irritation in the throat is controlled and eventually treated.

Kids can also bathe in Epsom salt as it is completely safe and natural.

8. Turmeric

Turmeric has many therapeutic benefits due to curcumin in it. Since it has antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties, it can fight croup very well.

You may consume three pinches of turmeric before going to bed and drink two sips of water. The turmeric powder will stick to the mucus membranes and break it.

You may also add it to the gargling water and gargle thrice a day with turmeric water. Make sure the water is not too hot or you’ll burn the throat.

9. Hydrate yourself

Remaining hydrated is the key to treat croup. Croup or barking cough is triggered when you don’t consume a lot of fluids. 

When you suffer from croup, make sure you drink enough water, warm soup, fresh fruit (without ice) juices and herbal teas. This can break the mucus constantly and flush out the toxins from your body.

10. Moisten the air

You may use a cool-mist humidifier to moisten the air. Often when the air is dry, your throat may get more irritated and you may have a croup attack again.

Ensure your surrounding is clean and you always have a nice humidifier. You may also take a walk outside as the fresh and cold air calms the croup too.

Always remember that the fresh air flow must never be obstructed during a croup attack.


Most of the time, Croup can be treated at home. Taking too many antibiotics will never help. As croup is caused because of viruses, you will have to strengthen your body’s natural defense mechanism to fight the infection.

Make sure you have a balanced diet and avoid having oily or fried foods. You should also increase the intake of herbs and spices that are good for your overall health.

Taking steams twice a day, gargling your throat, and having a hot bath at least once a day is very effective treatments in relieving the symptoms.
