When your mouth glands aren’t producing enough saliva for any reason or an underlying cause, you would suffer from Dry Mouth.

This condition is also known as xerostomia or hyposalivation. Although the symptoms of this problem are easily treatable, sometimes the dry mouth is caused due to another illness that requires medical attention.

It can often happen anytime around the year, especially summer. This is when your body needs excessive water, however, we remain forgetful to be hydrated.

Many over-the-counter syrups, medicines, treatments and supplements can be effective.

There are many natural, home, and herbal remedies that you can try considering the severity of your problem.

If the dry mouth condition has just begun, you can try these remedies and treat your condition immediately. If you’re on medication, you can try these on the side to ensure a quicker relief from the problem. Here are some home remedies for your dry mouth condition:

1. Hydration

Keeping yourself hydrated is the first and foremost cure of every health problem. When your body is deprived of water or hydration, the dry mouth is an indication that you need to drink water.

Since many people don’t drink enough water throughout the day, you can try drinking fruit juices or have watery fruits that can keep you hydrated.

You may also include soups and broths to treat dehydration. Popsicles are a great option for summer.

2. Chewing gum

While some gums can be bad for your health, you can try chewing sugarless gum for 10 minutes to avoid the dry mouth condition.

This can provide instant relief as most gums contain xylitol which can help produce enough saliva. It is advised to chew gums at least twice a day.

3. Aloe Vera

Drinking Aloe Vera juice or adding aloe vera gel to your oral hygiene can help moisturize the mouth.

In a recent study, it was proven how aloe vera helps to protect the sensitive tissue in the mouth and enhances the moisturizing effect.

You can also buy a mouth wash containing aloe vera so it can destroy the oral infections and hydrate your saliva glands to produce more saliva.

4. Ginger

Ginger has many antioxidants and pH balancing properties. When your body is dehydrated, having ginger water or ginger tea can help balance the pH levels.

You can also use ginger water sprays or ginger lozenges to treat the dry mouth condition as ginger contains anti-inflammatory properties that can treat the dryness, redness and swelling of many glands.

5. Breathing Exercises

Many breathing exercises can stimulate the thyroid, throat and salivary glands. Practising yoga and other breathing exercises can treat many such oral health conditions.

Doctors advise breathing with a closed mouth. When you keep your mouth open and breathe, it can easily dry out the tongue and the salivary glands.

When you have a respiratory health problem, your nasal passage can get blocked and that can force you to breathe with an open mouth.

You must try various breathing exercises to treat the nasal condition and then breathe with a closed mouth to treat the dry mouth condition. This can improve saliva flow.

6. Sweet/Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper is often a great solution for respiratory tract illnesses, sinusitis, oral hygiene and nasal congestion. It is a great ingredient for your herbal tea and salad garnish.

Since cayenne pepper stimulates the production of saliva because of its spicy flavour, it is one of the best remedies for the dry mouth syndrome.

Since some people lose their taste senses or have weak taste buds when they have a dry mouth, this pepper can help boost their taste buds functioning too.

It helps the production of saliva and sense tastes better even when you have a fever, cold or cough.

7. Marshmallow Root

Marshmallow root is a great herbal remedy to treat dry mouth effectively. It has been used by many people already to get rid of tastelessness or cold and cough too.

It even has many antioxidants so you will be treated of your cold and cough easily. Make sure you do this remedy every day for at least one or two weeks for best results.

8. Lemon

Lemon, a citrus fruit, is known for its pH balancing and germs killing abilities for centuries now. It can easily stimulate the salivary glands and promote saliva production so your mouth doesn’t feel dry.

Many people with this condition find comfort and improvement when they have this vitamin C rich ingredient in the daily diet.

You can simply squeeze a few drops of lemon in your mouth, this is only when your mouth is not too dry. Or, you may have lemon juice with a glass of water.

There are many other ways to use lemon: lemonade, fresh lemon juice, or just water with a few drops of lemon, lemon oil, lemon peel, or lemon flavoured candies.

9. Spices

Eating spicy foods can stimulate the salivary gland as your taste buds receive a spicy and pungent taste from the spices. Spices are said to treat many oral healthy problems for ages now.

For example, cloves and cardamoms can clear dental plaque and boost stimaultion of the salivary glands.

You can use pepper, fennel seeds, cardamom, or cloves for dry mouth. You can boil these spices with a glass of water and keep sipping it throughout the day or add them in your food.

10. Gargle

Gargling your mouth and throat with saltwater, honeywater or warm/lukewarm water can provide instant relief from the oral dryness. This is especially good when you have a dry mouth because of cold and cough.

Gargling can be done at any time of the day. You should do this twice or thrice every day for a week to get best results.

Although there is no proper research to indicate when and how this situation can pop, you may be able to determine the condition’s severity on the basis of how dry your mouth feels.
