Constipation is a very common problem in both adults as well as kids. It can be caused normally from time to time in toddlers because they might have problems digesting well.

Toddlers don’t walk well and eat a lot, this can cause many digestive problems. This is nothing to worry about as most kids suffer from constipation often.

Fortunately, constipation can be cured normally on its own by following some home remedies. Only if the case worsens, one may have to consult a doctor.

Going to the toilet may be difficult for your toddler especially if the stool is very hard. You may use some over-the-counter creams to soften the stool, however, not all laxatives can be given to kids.

1. Triphala

Triphala is one of the oldest ways to treat constipation in both adults and toddlers. It is the safest form of laxative that can be given to toddlers. Ayurveda considers Triphala as one of the best medicines to regulate bowel movements.

It is a combination of three herbs called amalaki, bibhitaki, and haritaki. You may mix a bit of triphala in your child’s milk and serve right before bedtime. Many herbal practitioners and medical doctors suggest this remedy. 

Triphala also has many other health benefits for your child. 

2. Banana

Most kids love bananas and enjoy eating them or drinking them in milk or smoothies. Bananas can be consumed even when the child has just started eating solid foods. 

Bananas are very rich in dietary fibres. These fibres aid in digestion and regulate the bowel movements. You can give a small cup of bananas to your toddler every morning with milk or as a fruit.

You can even add some maple syrup or honey for an added flavour, your baby will love it. Having a banana every day can treat chronic constipation in kids.

3. Asafoetida

Also commonly known as Hing in India, Asafoetida is often used to treat constipation in kids. Many mothers apply asafoetida paste on their baby’s belly to cure constipation. You can pour some paste in your baby’s belly button and massage the belly button lightly for a while.

It is very well-known for its laxative properties. It can treat constipation almost instantly.

4. Castor Oil

Castor Oil is a panacea for this. It has brilliant laxative properties that can relieve constipation almost immediately. Most mothers report bowel movements within 12-24 hours of consumption or massage.

You can simply massage some castor oil on your baby’s abdomen or the anal area to ensure the stool passes smoothly. This should be enough to treat constipation naturally.

5. Fibre-Rich Foods

When kids learn to eat, they often love tasty foods that are artificially made. It excites them to try new flavours of certain dairy products and sweets and candies.

However, it is important that you make your kid eat fibre-rich foods.

Certain vegetables such as broccoli, fruits including apples and pears, and whole grains including oats and barley can have great fibrous properties. These vegetables can be extremely easy to digest for your baby.

6. Avoid Cheese

Most kids love cheese these days. However, it can terribly hard on their digestive systems as they don’t move too much. It is best to keep them away from cheese as it is not too healthy for them.

If you feed your baby cheese for protein, you can choose to feed the baby spinach, milk or beans for healthier sources of protein instead.

7. Petroleum Jelly

8. Physical Activity

Toddlers can be slow to learn to walk sometimes. Or, even if they learn to walk, they may get inactive on some days.

This is not acceptable as they may have problems digesting their foods. You may make them walk a bit or hold them straight in your arms and take a walk in the fresh air.

9. Juices

Natural fruit juices can be extremely tasty. You can give as many natural homemade fruit juices as you can to your loved one.

If your child hates juices, ensure that the baby drinks enough water every day.

Children above the age of 1 year can consume some probiotics too. You may give your child a small bowl of fresh curd, yogurt, or kimchi.
